In a given day, most of us endure a lot of physical activity. Working on your feet, tackling housework, or wrangling your kids are all considered physical activity. But a common misconception is that physical activity and exercise are the same thing. Here’s a breakdown of the difference between the two:
- Physical activity: Any movement from your muscles that expends energy.
- Exercise: Planned, structured, and repetitive movement that is done for the purpose of improving fitness.
Unfortunately, even if your day is packed with physical activity, you won’t receive all the benefits of exercise unless you make time for planned exercise. You need to go for a walk, take part in a sport, or map out some time where you’re expending energy for one reason; to improve your overall fitness.
